Animal Rights

Animal Welfare at Colready Farm

At Colready Farm, we are dedicated to continually improving animal welfare, guided by the internationally recognised Five Freedoms framework.

1. Freedom to Express Natural Behaviour

  • Animals have ample space, proper facilities, and live with others of their kind — many raised together from birth.
  • Farm staff are skilled, knowledgeable, and attentive to animal behaviour and environmental needs.

2. Freedom from Injury and Disease

  • Animals are treated with respect and dignity throughout life and are provided with a humane death.
  • Inspected twice daily by experienced staff trained in animal husbandry.
  • All new staff will be trained to recognise any signs of ill health and report it immediately.
  • Any signs of illness or disease will be treated immediately and appropriately by experienced and qualified staff, or by the vet if necessary.
  • Health and treatments are logged in the farm medicine record.
  • Appropriate minerals are provided regularly.
  • Highlands receive regular foot trimming, annual TB testing, and disease monitoring.
  • Infectious animals are isolated in accordance with our isolation plan.

3. Freedom from Discomfort

  • Animals enjoy a natural environment with shelter and resting areas.
  • Highland cows can access fresh grass, large fields, and shaded or sheltered areas year-round.
  • Field rotation every 6–8 weeks ensures optimal grazing and comfort.
  • Cleaning Regime: Sheds are mucked weekly and bedded 2–3 times per week with fresh straw.

4. Freedom from Thirst and Hunger

  • Multiple freshwater troughs in every field are checked daily to ensure cleanliness and functionality.
  • If any issue arises with water access, it is resolved immediately.
  • Feeding Regime: Animals have constant access to fresh grass, hay, or silage.

5. Freedom from Fear and Distress

  • All animals will be free from conditions that lead to mental suffering.
  • Animals are handled with the utmost care.
  • Colready Farm is a closed herd; animals live their full natural life on-site.
  • Only the bull is transported every 3–4 years. The trailer used for transportation is inspected as part of Red Tractor Farm Assurance and the transport emergency plan is filed in the office.
  • Loading takes place from a secure pen with gated race areas to ensure minimum stress.
  • Animals are only transported if fit to travel; no sick or lame animal will be moved.

Additional Welfare and Safety Measures

Animal Death Protocol

  • Any animal that dies on the premises is moved to a designated secure area until collected.

Farm Security

  • Farm entrance is gated and locked with a combination padlock (known only to owners).
  • A second gate with a separate lock protects access to the yard.
  • Perimeter is securely fenced with gated intervals to prevent escape.
  • Motion sensors alert the house to any entry or exit along the boundary.

Escape Management

  • In the event of an animal escape, boundary security is verified immediately.
  • The animal is calmly and swiftly returned to its group or retrieved if it strays off-property.

Thank you for supporting our commitment to high welfare farming.
